about the Missionary Work in the Southern Taiwan: |
| 基督教在臺灣南部宣教溯源於1865年，英國長老教會宣教師馬雅各（1836∼1921)以優異成績畢業於愛丁堡大學醫學院，1864年經由中國廈門輕舟簡從來台正式展開宣教。

Christian missionaries first started their work
in the southern Taiwan in 1865. Dr. James L. Maxwell (1836-1921), a British
Presbyterian missionary who graduated from the Medical School of the University
of Edinburgh with high marks, traveled to Taiwan from Xiamen, China by boat
in 1864 and started his missionary work since then.

| 馬雅各的工作是醫療及傳道，在高雄旗後開設醫院並設立台灣第一間基督教會「旗後教會」,爾後經歷許多宣教師的努力及本地信徒的堅定見證，陸續於台灣南部各地設立多處教會。 |
| Dr. Maxwell worked through medical practices and
proselytizing. He opened a clinic in Chi-ho, Kaohsiung and established the
first Christian Church called “Chi-ho Church”. Following this, the efforts
of the many missionaries and the steadfast testimonies of the local members
have brought churches to many places in the southern Taiwan. |

| 二、高雄中會成立沿革： |

of the Kaohsiung Presbytery: |
| 台灣基督長老教會南部中會於1926年分設高雄、台南、嘉義、台中等四個區議會。1930年南部中會改為南部大會，四個區議會升格為中會。1930年5月21日，第一屆高雄中會成立於北野町教會（鹽埕教會之前身）。 |
The Southern Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church
in Taiwan set up its four regional churches in Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chiayi
and Taichung in 1926. In 1930, the Southern Presbytery was reorganized as
the Southern Synod, and that the four aforementioned regional churches became
“Presbyteries”. On May 21, 1930, the 1st Kaohsiung Presbytery was held in
Peiyeitin Church, which later became Yen-cheng Church.

| 1895年台灣成為日本之殖民地，1941年太平洋戰爭爆發，教會因受政府攪擾而停頓，同年南部大會與中會因而解散。1943年被迫成立台灣教團總會，1945年終戰後教會隨即復興，1946年南部大會與高雄中會復會。 |
| In 1895, Taiwan was taken by Japan as one of her
colonies. When the World War II broke out in 1941, due to the interferences
of the then government, the churches stopped services and the Southern Synod
as well as Presbyteries were dissolved. In 1943, the same government commanded
that the general assembly of Taiwan Presbytery be formed. In 1945, after
the war was over, the churches were reopened and the Southern Synod and
the Kaohsiung Presbytery were restored. |
